Adult Summer Reading Challenge

Welcome to the home of the Adult Summer Reading Challenge at the Murrysville Community Library! This year we are doing things a little differently in order to protect both patrons and staff from Covid-19. Instead of the typical in-person program the Library normally offers, we are launching an all digital challenge. Programming will begin on Monday, June 8 and end on Saturday, August 15. This summer patrons are encouraged to imagine the possibilities with this brand new programming style.

Everything you need to participate, you can find in the 2020 Imagine Your Story Adult Summer Reading Challenge on Beanstack* or here on the Library’s website. On Beanstack you track your progress through the Challenge with badges and win tickets! The more badges you complete, the more tickets you earn! There are badges for activities, programs, and reading. You have the option to pick which badges you want to complete. Mix and match badges or pick one type you like and stick with it. To complete the program you only need to finish twenty badges, after which you will receive a certificate and extra tickets.

Activities you can earn badges for include crafts, fun word games, Color-Me-Calm pages, and drawing prompts. The Library is also offering a variety of programs this summer some of which will be prerecorded while others will be live. The main feature of this year’s program will be a Virtual Book Club. The book club will meet every other week beginning on Wednesday, July 1 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss short works of different genres and literary styles. You must register for EACH Virtual Book Club meeting. When registering be sure to include a valid e-mail address since the moderator Coordinator of Circulation Maria Cuccaro will be e-mailing those registered with details for attending the event. Anyone interested can register on the Library’s Calendar. Another program to look forward to is Cooking with the Cuccaros, a series of recorded cooking tutorials with Maria Cuccaro and her sister, Chef Shannon Israel. The videos will be released on the Library’s YouTube channel* every other week beginning on Wednesday, July 8 and do not require registration.

The tickets that you earn throughout the Challenge are virtual and earned with Beanstack. They can be put toward chances to win any or all of the great baskets we have this year.  We have five baskets: a Kitchen Basket, a Journaling Basket, a Book Lover’s Basket, a Crafting Basket and a Knitting Basket. For more information about the contents of the baskets login to Beanstack*.

In order to win a basket you or your representative must be able to pick up the basket at the Murrysville Community Library by September. The drawing will occur on August 15, 2020. If the Library is not open for curbside or in-person transactions at that time, other arrangements will made.

Patrons who register for the Adult Summer Reading Challenge can request a To-Go Box which will have some of the supplies needed to complete the crafts. Anyone who would like a To-Go Box should e-mail Maria Cuccaro at: maria.cuccaro@wlnonline.org. Arrangements for picking up the box at the Library will be made at that time.

Below you will find a pathway for your summer reading journey. Each of the crafts, activities, and programs, or as Beanstack calls them badges, are grouped together to provide the best experience for you this summer. On Beanstack*you will find some badges that are not grouped with a week those badges can be completed at anytime and are to supplement your summer reading journey.

Join us for live music under the oak trees at Townsend Park. Each date will feature a different performer, food truck, and beverage vendor. The Murrysville Community Library is supplying activities for kids, but all ages are welcome to come tap their toes and dance. Bring your blanket or chair and enjoy an evening in the park! Tuesdays at Townsend takes place from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on June 23, June 30, July 7,  and July 21.

Videos posted to our YouTube channel for any Summer Reading Challenge are available to view from their premier date and time through August 15.
